Squarespace guide
Can AI agents shop a Squarespace store?
Usually, as long as 'Block known artificial intelligence crawlers' stays off and your product pages spell out delivery and returns, because Squarespace adds Product markup itself and its shared robots.txt only blocks admin, search and filtered views.
Squarespace serves one robots.txt for every site and adds structured data you can't edit, so your levers are the Crawlers settings, how your product pages are written, your policy pages and, on version 7.1, an llms.txt you write yourself.

Common problems
An illustrative store, not a real result. Your own result shows only what is really on your store.
Squarespace at a glance
- robots.txt
- One shared file for every site, which you can't edit. Settings > Crawlers adds blocks.
- AI crawler toggle
- 'Block known artificial intelligence crawlers' disallows 26 bots. It's off by default.
- Structured data
- Product markup added automatically: name, image, price range, availability. Not editable.
- llms.txt
- Written by you and off by default, on version 7.1 sites.
What usually breaks on Squarespace
Squarespace leaves few settings to get wrong, so the gaps are commonly a switched toggle or facts that were never written onto the page.
- 01
The AI crawler toggle was switched on
Settings > Crawlers > 'Block known artificial intelligence crawlers' disallows 26 user agents, including GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended and DuckAssistBot, an assistant's fetcher. Squarespace's own AI search guide says content is unlikely to appear in results if you limit crawlers' access to it.[2][4]
- 02
'Block search engine crawlers' hides the whole store
The other toggle in Settings > Crawlers adds Disallow: / to your robots.txt, and Squarespace says the site won't be indexed. It's meant for sites that shouldn't be found at all, and it hides a store from search, AI search included.[3]
- 03
Delivery costs are worked out at checkout
Flat, weight-based and live carrier rates are applied to the order's address. Unless a product page or shipping page states them, an agent that stops before checkout finds no delivery cost.[8][9]
- 04
Your return policy isn't in the markup
Squarespace generates fixed Product markup you can't edit. A return policy can be added under Checkout > Store policies, but it is not part of that markup, so an agent only finds your terms if a page it reads states them.[6][7]
How to fix it on Squarespace
You can't edit robots.txt or the automatic markup on Squarespace, so the fixes are settings and words on your pages.
- 1
Check both toggles in Settings > Crawlers
Leave 'Block Search engine crawlers' off. Turn 'Block known artificial intelligence crawlers' on only if you want out of AI training more than you want to be in AI answers: it's one switch for all 26 bots, and Squarespace doesn't let you write your own robots.txt rules instead.[1][2][3]
- 2
Write delivery and returns into every product page
In each product's description or additional information, state delivery cost and time for your main regions and your return window. Add your return policy under Settings > Selling > Checkout > Store policies, keep one Shipping and returns page with the full terms, and link it from the footer and from products.[7][8]
- 3
Write an llms.txt that points agents to the facts
On version 7.1, open SEO/AI Visibility > SEO Settings > LLMS.txt, write the file and turn it on; it's off by default. List your main collections and the pages that answer shoppers' questions: delivery, returns and size guides.[5]
llms.txt (example, use your own pages)# Northwind Outdoor > Waterproof outdoor clothing, shipped from Portland, Oregon. ## Shop - [All products](https://www.example.com/shop) - [Rain jackets](https://www.example.com/shop/rain-jackets) ## Before you buy - [Shipping and returns](https://www.example.com/shipping-returns): delivery cost and time by region, 30 day returns - [Size guide](https://www.example.com/size-guide) - 4
Keep variant prices and stock exact
The automatic markup carries a price range and availability from your product's variants. Set each variant's price and stock, and name the options in the description, so the range an agent reads matches what it can actually buy.[6]
What Squarespace has announced for AI agents
Squarespace's AI work so far is about being found by AI tools. As of October 2026 we found no store MCP server or agent checkout in its official sources.
- Oct 2025Hosting partner for Perplexity's CometSquarespace became the website building and hosting partner for Perplexity's Comet browser. It isn't a checkout integration.[10]
- Dec 2025Named in Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite launchStripe said Squarespace merchants will be able to bring their products into AI agents. No live date has been announced, and Stripe's April 2026 update named Wix, BigCommerce and WooCommerce, not Squarespace.[11][12]
- Jul 2026AI Visibility toolSquarespace added a tool that shows whether a brand appears in ChatGPT and Gemini answers, alongside a manual llms.txt.[5][13]
What Aiscovery checks on Squarespace
From the outside, the way an agent sees your store. Nothing to install, and agents stop before login, cart, checkout and payment.
- Which AI crawlers your robots.txt blocks, so you see at once whether the AI crawler toggle is on.
- Whether 'Block Search engine crawlers' has closed the whole store.
- llms.txt, when you've written one, and your sitemap.
- Page basics and JSON-LD syntax, including Squarespace's automatic Product markup.
- GPT-6 Luna and Gemini try to find a product, its price, stock, delivery cost and returns, stopping before cart and checkout.
Questions about Squarespace and AI agents
Does Squarespace block AI crawlers by default?
No. 'Block known artificial intelligence crawlers' in Settings > Crawlers is off by default. Turned on, it disallows 26 user agents, among them GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and Applebot-Extended.
Does the AI crawler toggle remove a store from ChatGPT?
Its list doesn't include OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User or PerplexityBot, the crawlers behind ChatGPT search, ChatGPT's fetches for users and Perplexity search. It does block GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended, and Squarespace says limiting crawlers makes content unlikely to appear in AI search results.
Can I edit robots.txt on Squarespace?
No. Every Squarespace site uses the same robots.txt, which blocks admin, search and filtered views, and users can't edit it. The two toggles in Settings > Crawlers are the only controls.
Does Squarespace support llms.txt?
Yes, on version 7.1 sites, but you write it yourself: it's off by default and lives under SEO/AI Visibility > SEO Settings > LLMS.txt.
Can ChatGPT buy from a Squarespace store?
Not through a Squarespace feature we could find. Stripe said in December 2025 that Squarespace merchants will be able to bring products into AI agents, without a date. Agents can still read your product pages, so delivery and returns need to be there.
Do I need to install anything for Aiscovery?
No. Aiscovery tests your store from the outside, the way an agent sees it, so there is nothing to add to your Squarespace site.
