Shopify guide
Can AI agents shop a Shopify store?
Usually yes, because Shopify serves product pages as HTML and its default robots.txt has no rules against AI crawlers, but agents commonly stop short on variant prices, delivery costs shown only at checkout, and policy pages that an old robots.txt.liquid still blocks.
Shopify hosts the storefront, so what you control is your theme, your apps, your written policies and an optional robots.txt.liquid template. Since 2025, and by default for eligible stores since 2026, Shopify also sends product data to AI channels through Shopify Catalog, which works separately from what agents read on your pages.

Common problems
An illustrative store, not a real result. Your own result shows only what is really on your store.
Shopify at a glance
- robots.txt
- Generated by Shopify. A theme's robots.txt.liquid template replaces it.
- Structured data
- Themes print the structured_data filter: price, currency and stock per variant, no shipping or returns.
- Bot protection
- Managed by Shopify. Unsigned bots get the strictest rate limits; Web Bot Auth signatures raise them.
- AI channels
- Agentic storefronts are on by default for eligible stores: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot, Meta.
What usually breaks on Shopify
Shopify stores start in a good place for agents. These are the gaps we commonly see between what a shopper's agent needs and what the storefront serves.
- 01
An old robots.txt.liquid still blocks your policy pages
Shopify's current default robots.txt no longer disallows /policies/ or /search. But a robots.txt.liquid template that outputs the default groups can bring back Disallow: /search and Disallow: /policies/, as Shopify's help center notes. A theme with a custom template may be telling crawlers to skip /policies/refund-policy and /policies/shipping-policy.[1][2]
- 02
Agents read the default variant's price
Product pages render the selected or first available variant on the server. Picking another size or colour fetches new HTML with JavaScript and rewrites the address to ?variant=. An agent that reads the first response, or can't work the option picker, quotes the default variant.[4][5]
- 03
Delivery cost reads 'calculated at checkout'
When your shipping policy isn't empty, Dawn, Shopify's reference theme, prints 'Shipping calculated at checkout' under the price, linked to that policy. Agents stop before checkout, so unless that policy page names rates and free delivery thresholds, there is no delivery cost to find.[6][8]
- 04
Shipping and returns are missing from structured data
The structured_data filter outputs Product or ProductGroup markup with price, currency and availability per variant, and no shipping details or return policy. Return rules you set in Shopify aren't copied into your written refund policy either.[7][9]
- 05
Discount and cookie pop-ups cover the product
Apps that open a discount offer, newsletter form or cookie banner on load sit over the price and options. A browser agent has to find and close each one before it can read the page, and some agents don't.
- 06
Empty policies lead nowhere
Written policies live in Settings > Policies and are served at /policies/ addresses. A policy you never filled in has no page to read, so the footer link an agent follows for returns comes back empty.[8]
How to fix it on Shopify
Most fixes live in your theme editor and Settings > Policies. Template edits are code: Shopify calls robots.txt.liquid an unsupported customization, so keep a copy of your current file first.
- 1
Drop old rules from robots.txt.liquid, or delete it
Open yourstore.com/robots.txt. If it still says Disallow: /policies/ or Disallow: /search, your theme has a robots.txt.liquid built on the older default groups. Deleting the template restores Shopify's current default. To keep the template, filter those two rules out, using the same pattern Shopify documents for removing a default rule.[1][2]
templates/robots.txt.liquid{% for group in robots.default_groups %} {{- group.user_agent }} {%- for rule in group.rules -%} {%- assign skip = false -%} {%- if rule.directive == 'Disallow' -%} {%- if rule.value == '/policies/' or rule.value == '/search' -%} {%- assign skip = true -%} {%- endif -%} {%- endif -%} {%- unless skip -%} {{ rule }} {%- endunless -%} {%- endfor -%} {%- if group.sitemap != blank -%} {{ group.sitemap }} {%- endif -%} {% endfor %} - 2
Decide per AI crawler, in groups after the defaults
Shopify adds no AI crawler rules, so every crawler follows the * group. To opt out of model training but stay in ChatGPT search, block GPTBot and leave OAI-SearchBot alone. Create the template in Online Store > Themes > Edit code > Add a new template > robots, and add plain groups after the default loop, as Shopify's docs do for other crawlers. A crawler obeys only the group that names it most specifically, so a GPTBot group that only says Allow: / also drops your cart and checkout rules for GPTBot.[1][12][13]
templates/robots.txt.liquid (after the loop)# Model training crawlers: opt out User-agent: GPTBot Disallow: / User-agent: Google-Extended Disallow: / # OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-User and the rest # keep following the default * group above. - 3
Put delivery costs where an agent can read them
Write rates, free delivery thresholds and delivery times into Settings > Policies > Shipping policy, so /policies/shipping-policy has real numbers. Add a text block with the common case to your product template in the theme editor, such as delivery time and cost for your main country, so the product page answers before checkout does.[8]
- 4
Add your return policy to structured data
Google reads a store-wide return policy from Organization markup. Add it once in theme.liquid with your own values, and enter the same policy in Google Merchant Center, which Google asks Shopify merchants to do as well.[10][11]
layout/theme.liquid (example values, use your own)<script type="application/ld+json"> { "@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "Organization", "name": {{ shop.name | json }}, "url": {{ shop.url | json }}, "hasMerchantReturnPolicy": { "@type": "MerchantReturnPolicy", "applicableCountry": "US", "returnPolicyCategory": "https://schema.org/MerchantReturnFiniteReturnWindow", "merchantReturnDays": 30, "returnMethod": "https://schema.org/ReturnByMail", "returnFees": "https://schema.org/FreeReturn", "merchantReturnLink": {{ shop.url | append: '/policies/refund-policy' | json }} } } </script> - 5
Keep pop-ups off the first view of product pages
In your discount and newsletter apps, show the offer on exit or after a scroll instead of on load, and keep the cookie banner to a bar that doesn't cover the price. The fewer things an agent must close, the more often it reaches the facts.

Review what Shopify shares with AI channels
Agentic storefronts sit under Sales channels > Agentic, with 'Allow Shopify to manage for me' on by default. Turn it off to choose channels, Catalog access and direct checkout one by one; turning Catalog access off can take up to 7 days to stop sharing. Shop can't be turned off there: to hide a product everywhere, Shop included, set it to Unlisted. Blocking crawlers in robots.txt doesn't stop Catalog sharing, so decide both separately.[2][14][15][24][25]
What Shopify has announced for AI agents
Shopify moves fast here. These are the announcements that change what agents can do on a Shopify store, newest last.
- May 2025Storefront MCP, Shopify Catalog and Checkout KitThe Summer '25 Edition gave developers store-specific agent tools, a global product catalog for AI platforms, and Checkout Kit for agents.[16][17]
- Sep 2025Shopify merchants to sell in ChatGPTShopify and OpenAI announced that Shopify merchants would sell to ChatGPT users, with merchants choosing between in-chat checkout and their own store.[18]
- Dec 2025Agentic StorefrontsThe Winter '26 Edition introduced Agentic Storefronts: one place to sell through AI platforms, with each platform toggled on or off.[19]
- Jan 2026Universal Commerce Protocol, with GoogleShopify said it co-developed UCP with Google, and that selling in Google AI Mode and the Gemini app was rolling out soon.[20]
- Mar 2026Selling to ChatGPT users by defaultProducts became discoverable in ChatGPT by default for eligible merchants, with purchases going through the store's own checkout in ChatGPT's in-app browser.[15][21]
- May 2026A default agents.md and llms.txt for every storeShopify started serving /agents.md, mirrored at /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt. Themes can override them with Liquid templates.[22][23]
- Jun 2026Catalog and UCP on by defaultThe Spring '26 Edition said merchants with eligible products are in Shopify Catalog and UCP-enabled by default, with per-channel controls in the admin.[26]
What Aiscovery checks on Shopify
From the outside, the way an agent sees your store. Nothing to install, and agents stop before login, cart, checkout and payment.
- What your live robots.txt, including robots.txt.liquid edits, declares for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-User, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended and Bingbot.
- Whether robots.txt rules cover paths agents need, such as /policies/ and /search.
- AI-facing files: robots.txt, sitemaps, and the llms.txt and llms-full.txt Shopify now serves.
- Page basics and JSON-LD syntax on the pages the check reads, with reachability and redirects.
- OpenAI GPT-6 Luna and Google Gemini try to find a product, a variant's price, stock, delivery cost and returns, stopping before cart and checkout.
Questions about Shopify and AI agents
Does Shopify block AI crawlers by default?
No. Shopify's managed robots.txt has no groups for GPTBot, ClaudeBot or other AI crawlers, and Shopify says bot management is handled for you at the network level. Unsigned bots get stricter rate limits than bots that sign requests with Web Bot Auth. A robots.txt.liquid template in your theme can add blocks of its own.
How do I allow or block GPTBot on Shopify?
Add a robots template (Online Store > Themes > Edit code > Add a new template > robots), keep Shopify's default groups loop, and add a User-agent: GPTBot group after it. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler. OAI-SearchBot decides whether you appear in ChatGPT search, and ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a user asks, where OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply.
If I block AI crawlers, do my products leave ChatGPT?
Not necessarily. Shopify says blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt or at the network level only affects open-web discovery. It doesn't stop Shopify Catalog sending product data to the agentic storefronts you have active. To stop that, turn off 'Allow Shopify to manage for me' under Sales channels > Agentic, then Catalog access per channel; it can take up to 7 days.
Can ChatGPT buy from a Shopify store?
Shoppers can, through your own checkout. For stores that sell to US customers (the store itself can be elsewhere), ChatGPT is on by default and sends buyers to your store's checkout in its in-app browser. Copilot also needs a store selling to US customers, with direct checkout for US-based customers; Google AI Mode and Gemini need a US-based store and Merchant Center.
Does Shopify add llms.txt to my store?
Yes. Since May 2026 Shopify serves a default /agents.md, mirrored at /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt, and a theme can override each with its own Liquid template.
Do I need a Shopify app to use Aiscovery?
No. Aiscovery tests your storefront from the outside, the way an agent sees it, so there is nothing to install in your Shopify admin.
