BigCommerce guide

Can AI agents shop a BigCommerce store?

Mostly, because BigCommerce lets AI crawlers in by default and its Cornerstone theme prints product markup, but the platform quietly slows AI crawlers and keeps them off filter pages, option prices load only after a pick, and delivery cost waits for an address in the cart.

BigCommerce hosts the store and adds robots rules of its own on top of yours. Your levers are the Search Engine Robots setting, your Stencil theme or Catalyst storefront, your shipping and returns pages, and the opt-in Storefront MCP.

What usually breaks on BigCommerce

BigCommerce leaves the door open to AI crawlers. The friction is in rules you can't see and facts that load late.

  1. 01

    Hidden platform rules slow AI crawlers down

    BigCommerce adds rules for a list of known high-volume crawlers, AI crawlers included: a Crawl-delay of 10 seconds and blocks on cart, checkout, account, admin and filter pages. They don't show in the control panel and can't be edited there; you only see them at yourstore.com/robots.txt.[1]

  2. 02

    Option prices appear only after a pick

    In Cornerstone, choosing a size or colour asks the server for the new price and stock over AJAX and updates the page in place. The address doesn't change, so there is no link for an agent to open 'the blue one in medium'.[3]

  3. 03

    Delivery cost says 'Calculated at Checkout'

    The product page's shipping row shows a label, not a rate, unless the product has free or fixed shipping. The cart's shipping estimator needs an address before it shows anything, and agents stop before cart and checkout.[4]

  4. 04

    Price ranges in non-standard markup

    For products with a price range, Cornerstone puts minPrice and maxPrice on a single Offer instead of an Offer per variant, and adds no shipping or return policy. Google's merchant listings expect an Offer per buyable product.[2][6]

  5. 05

    Catalyst serves yesterday's robots.txt

    Catalyst's robots.txt route reads your control panel setting when the storefront is built, so a change in the admin goes live only after the next build.[5]

How to fix it on BigCommerce

Most of this is in the control panel and your theme files. Check your live robots.txt first, because it isn't what the admin shows.

Check which AI crawlers your robots.txt allows, free
  1. 1

    Read your live robots.txt, then add your own groups

    Open yourstore.com/robots.txt to see the platform's crawler rules next to yours. BigCommerce says you need no entries to allow AI crawling. To opt out of training, add groups in Settings > Website > Search Engine Robots, per storefront on Multi-Storefront. For tighter bot control, BigCommerce points to an infrastructure service such as Cloudflare.[1][10]

    Settings > Website > Search Engine Robots, added lines
    # Opt out of model training. Groups that name the same
    # crawler are combined, so the platform's rules still apply.
    User-agent: GPTBot
    Disallow: /

    User-agent: CCBot
    Disallow: /
  2. 2

    Answer the delivery question on the product page

    Where it's true, set free or fixed shipping on the product so the shipping row shows a real value. Otherwise add a short delivery summary to the description, with cost and time for your main region, and link a shipping page with the full rates.[4]

  3. 3

    Publish store-wide shipping and returns in markup

    Google reads store-wide shipping and return policies from Organization markup. Add it once in your theme's base layout, with your own values, so every page carries delivery cost and return terms.[7][8][9]

    templates/layout/base.html (example values, use your own)
    <script type="application/ld+json">
    {
      "@context": "https://schema.org",
      "@type": "Organization",
      "name": "Northwind Outdoor",
      "url": "https://www.example.com",
      "hasShippingService": {
        "@type": "ShippingService",
        "shippingConditions": {
          "@type": "ShippingConditions",
          "shippingDestination": { "@type": "DefinedRegion", "addressCountry": "US" },
          "shippingRate": { "@type": "MonetaryAmount", "value": 4.95, "currency": "USD" }
        }
      },
      "hasMerchantReturnPolicy": {
        "@type": "MerchantReturnPolicy",
        "applicableCountry": "US",
        "returnPolicyCategory": "https://schema.org/MerchantReturnFiniteReturnWindow",
        "merchantReturnDays": 30,
        "returnMethod": "https://schema.org/ReturnByMail",
        "returnFees": "https://schema.org/FreeReturn"
      }
    }
    </script>
  4. 4

    Write option prices and stock where agents can read them

    If sizes or colours change the price, list them in a short table in the description, and keep stock per option accurate so the page and the markup agree after a pick.[3]

  5. 5

    Turn on Storefront MCP if you want agents to shop through it

    Under Settings > API and MCP > MCP (store owners only), the Storefront MCP toggle gives agents catalog search, product and variant details and a cart, then hands the shopper to your checkout. Each storefront gets its own endpoint.[11]

  6. 6

    On Catalyst, rebuild after robots changes, or own them in code

    Trigger a build after editing robots.txt in the admin. Catalyst's own route suggests deleting it and using a Next.js robots.ts if you'd rather keep the rules in code.[5]

What BigCommerce has announced for AI agents

Commerce, the parent company of BigCommerce and Feedonomics, has moved on several fronts at once. Newest last.

  1. Oct 2025Agentic checkout pilot with PayPalPilot merchants could take checkout inside AI discovery platforms through PayPal's agentic commerce services, with Feedonomics mapping catalogs.[13]
  2. Dec 2025Stripe's Agentic Commerce SuiteBigCommerce integrated with Stripe's suite for agent discovery and checkout, with tax, shipping and order handoff.[14]

What Aiscovery checks on BigCommerce

From the outside, the way an agent sees your store. Nothing to install, and agents stop before login, cart, checkout and payment.

  • Your live robots.txt, platform rules included, and what it declares for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and other AI crawlers.
  • Crawl-delay and filter page rules that slow or block AI crawlers.
  • Page basics and JSON-LD syntax, including Cornerstone's Product markup.
  • Reachability and redirects for our identified checker, and AI-facing files such as sitemaps and llms.txt.
  • GPT-6 Luna and Gemini try to find a product, an option's price, stock, delivery cost and returns, stopping before cart and checkout.

Questions about BigCommerce and AI agents

Does BigCommerce block AI crawlers?

Not by default: BigCommerce says no robots.txt entries are needed to allow AI crawling. It does add its own rules for high-volume crawlers, AI ones included, with a 10 second crawl delay and blocks on cart, checkout, account, admin and filter pages. You only see them at /robots.txt.

How do I edit robots.txt on BigCommerce?

In the control panel, go to Settings > Website and edit Search Engine Robots, per storefront if you run several. On Catalyst, the change goes live after the next build.

Does BigCommerce have an MCP server for AI agents?

Yes. Since May 2026, Storefront MCP is an opt-in setting the store owner turns on under Settings > API and MCP > MCP. It lets agents search the catalog, read product and variant details and build a cart, then hands checkout to your store.

Can ChatGPT buy from a BigCommerce store?

BigCommerce has announced several routes: a PayPal agentic checkout pilot, Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite, and Feedonomics exports to ChatGPT and other assistants. Which agents can complete a purchase depends on which of these programs a store joins; we couldn't confirm a general rollout.

Is BigCommerce now called Commerce?

The company is: Commerce is the parent company of BigCommerce, Feedonomics and Makeswift. BigCommerce is still the name of the store platform.

Do I need a BigCommerce app to use Aiscovery?

No. Aiscovery tests your storefront from the outside, the way an agent sees it, so there is nothing to install.
