# Can AI agents shop a PrestaShop store?

> Can AI agents shop a PrestaShop store? What the generated robots.txt blocks, why combinations hide behind # links, missing shipping data, and how to fix it.

Usually for the default combination, since PrestaShop themes print JSON-LD and the generated robots.txt leaves product pages open, but other combinations hide behind # links the server never sees, product pages show no shipping cost, and returns are off until you turn them on.

PrestaShop is self-hosted, so robots.txt, theme, modules and hosting are all yours. The back office generates a robots.txt, the Classic and Hummingbird themes produce JSON-LD, and protection against bots depends on your host and modules.

2. Prices change by country or customer group, so agents see a different total.

## PrestaShop at a glance

- **robots.txt:** Generated in Shop Parameters \> Traffic & SEO. Regenerating overwrites the whole file.
- **Structured data:** JSON-LD in Classic and Hummingbird: one Offer, for the default combination.
- **Combinations:** Picked with # fragments like #/1-size-s; price and stock refresh over AJAX.
- **Agent features:** An MCP Server module for the back office. Agentic commerce is on the roadmap.

## What usually breaks on PrestaShop

PrestaShop's defaults are reasonable for search engines. Agents trip over combinations, shipping and returns.

### 1. Combinations hide behind # links

Choosing a size or colour writes it after a # in the address, like #/1-size-s/8-color-white, and refreshes price, stock and images over AJAX. The part after # never reaches the server, so a crawler opening that link gets the default combination. ### 2. Regenerating robots.txt wipes your rules

The 'Generate robots.txt file' button replaces the existing file. Any AI crawler groups you added by hand disappear the next time someone presses it, for example after installing a module. ### 3. No shipping cost on the product page

The Classic theme's price block shows the tax label and delivery time text, but no shipping cost. Carriers are priced by zone and weight or price ranges, worked out in the cart. ### 4. Returns are off by default

Merchandise returns aren't activated by default. Until you turn them on and publish your terms, an agent asked about returns has nothing to find. [\[8\]](https://docs.prestashop-project.org/v.8-documentation/user-guide/selling/managing-customer-service/merchandise-returns)

### 5. Markup with a borrowed brand and a short-lived price

The theme's JSON-LD uses the meta description as the product description and, when no manufacturer is set, your shop name as the brand (an Organization in Hummingbird). ## How to fix it on PrestaShop

Some fixes are back office settings; the robots.txt one is a few lines in a module, so it survives regeneration.

### 1. Append AI crawler rules from a module, not by hand

When you press 'Generate robots.txt file' in the back office, PrestaShop runs the actionAdminMetaAfterWriteRobotsFile hook with the open file handle, so a small module can append its own crawler groups each time. (actionAdminMetaBeforeWriteRobotsFile can change the \* group's rules instead.) Regenerations triggered by editing shop URLs don't run the hooks, so check the file after those. ### 2. Give combinations addresses the server can see

PrestaShop's product route can carry the combination ID in the path, before the product name. Link important combinations that way from size guides and listings, and add a short table of combination prices and stock to the description. ### 3. State shipping on product pages

Use the delivery time fields for in-stock and out-of-stock products, and add a line with your shipping cost or free shipping threshold through the theme or a reassurance block, linked to a full delivery page. ### 4. Turn on merchandise returns and publish the terms

### 5. Fill in brand and description so the markup is right

## What PrestaShop has announced for AI agents

PrestaShop's AI work so far is for merchants in the back office; shopping agents are on the roadmap. Newest last.

- **2026: PrestaShop MCP Server module.** A module for merchants, not shopping agents: it lets AI tools work with your store's back office (catalog, orders, customers and stock) through PrestaShop's own authentication. - **Sep 2026: PrestaShop 9.2 with Ask AI.** PrestaShop 9.2 added one page checkout and Ask AI, a back office assistant built on the MCP Server, using the merchant's own AI provider. [\[11\]](https://build.prestashop-project.org/news/2026/prestashop-9-2-0-available/)

## Questions about PrestaShop and AI agents

**Q: How do I edit robots.txt in PrestaShop?**

A: Generate it in Shop Parameters \> Traffic & SEO, then add your own rules. Regenerating replaces the file, so add rules from a module on the actionAdminMetaAfterWriteRobotsFile hook, which the back office Generate button runs, and check the file after changing shop URLs.

**Q: Does PrestaShop block AI crawlers?**

A: No. The generated robots.txt has a single \* group that blocks system folders, the cart, checkout, account and search pages, and sort and filter parameters, for every crawler alike.

**Q: Why do agents see the wrong combination price?**

A: Combinations are chosen with # fragments that never reach the server, and the price refreshes over AJAX. An agent opening the link gets the default combination unless it works the selectors.

**Q: Does PrestaShop output structured data?**

A: Yes. The Classic theme has used JSON-LD since 2021, and Hummingbird uses the same partials: Product with one Offer, without shipping or return details.

**Q: Can ChatGPT buy from a PrestaShop store?**

A: Not through a PrestaShop feature yet: agentic commerce is planned for Q4 2026 or later on its roadmap. Third-party modules on PrestaShop Addons offer agent checkout, but they aren't PrestaShop products.

**Q: Do I need a PrestaShop module to use Aiscovery?**
