# Can AI agents shop a Magento store?

> Can AI agents shop a Magento or Adobe Commerce store? Default robots.txt rules, microdata, swatches and Fastly limits that trip agents, and how to fix each.

Often, but with more work than on hosted platforms: Magento's default robots.txt instructions block every address with a query string, core templates mark up price but not stock, and configurable product options are drawn by JavaScript, so agents commonly miss the variant and its availability.

Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce give you full control and full responsibility: robots.txt lives in the admin, structured data comes from your theme, and bot protection depends on your host or, on Adobe's cloud, a paid add-on.

> Example: what an agent runs into on Magento

> Interactive demo on the HTML page: an illustrative storefront scene with numbered spots that match the common problems below.

Common problems:

1. Configurable products show the final price only after an option is chosen.
2. Layered navigation creates thousands of near-duplicate pages.
3. Heavy pages time out before an agent finishes reading.

> Example: An illustrative store, not a real result. Your own result shows only what is really on your store.

## Magento at a glance

- **robots.txt:** Content \> Design \> Configuration \> Search Engine Robots, a free-text field with a Reset to Default.
- **Structured data:** Core templates use microdata: name, SKU, price, currency. No stock, no JSON-LD.
- **Bot protection:** Adobe's cloud Fastly WAF excludes bot mitigation; Advanced Security is a paid add-on.
- **Returns:** The returns (RMA) feature is in Adobe Commerce only, not Magento Open Source.

## What usually breaks on Magento

Magento stores are often heavily customised, so check your own theme. These are the gaps that come with the core.

### 1. Reset to Default blocks every query string

Magento's default robots.txt instructions, loaded when someone clicks Reset to Default, include Disallow: /\*? and Disallow: /catalog/. That blocks filtered and preselected variant addresses for every crawler, and product URLs that never got a rewrite. [\[1\]](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/commerce-admin/marketing/seo/seo-overview) [\[2\]](https://github.com/magento/magento2/blob/2.4-develop/app/code/Magento/Theme/etc/config.xml)

### 2. Swatches appear only after JavaScript runs

On configurable products the swatch area is an empty element in the HTML; a script draws the options and updates the price when one is picked. An agent reading the page without that script sees no sizes or colours at all. [\[4\]](https://github.com/magento/magento2/blob/2.4-develop/app/code/Magento/Swatches/view/base/web/js/swatch-renderer.js)

### 3. Stock isn't in the markup

Core templates mark up name, SKU, price and currency as microdata, but the 'In stock' label carries no availability property, and there is no JSON-LD, shipping or return policy. [\[5\]](https://github.com/magento/magento2/blob/2.4-develop/app/code/Magento/Catalog/view/frontend/layout/catalog_product_view.xml)

### 4. Returns are a CMS page on Open Source

The returns (RMA) feature is exclusive to Adobe Commerce. On Magento Open Source your returns terms are only as findable as the CMS page you wrote and linked. [\[6\]](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/commerce-admin/stores-sales/order-management/returns/rma-configure)

### 5. Bot rules sit with your host or a paid add-on

On Adobe Commerce cloud, the standard Fastly WAF doesn't cover bot mitigation or rate limiting. Bot Management, with AI crawler detection, comes with the paid Advanced Security add-on, and as of October 2026 its rules still change only through support tickets, with self-service in the Commerce Admin scheduled for Q4 2026. [\[7\]](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/commerce-on-cloud/user-guide/cdn/fastly-waf-service) [\[8\]](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/commerce-on-cloud/user-guide/cdn/advanced-security)

## How to fix it on Magento

These changes go in the admin and your theme. On Adobe Commerce cloud, robots.txt edits take effect only in Production with search engine indexing turned on.

[Check which AI crawlers your robots.txt allows, free](https://aiscovery.io/tools/ai-crawler-checker)

### 1. Replace the blanket query-string rule

In Content \> Design \> Configuration \> Search Engine Robots, block the toolbar parameters that create near-duplicate pages instead of every query string, and keep private areas closed. Turn on Enable Submission to Robots.txt under the XML Sitemap settings to add your sitemap line. [\[1\]](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/commerce-admin/marketing/seo/seo-overview) [\[3\]](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/commerce-on-cloud/user-guide/configure-store/robots-sitemap)

Edit custom instruction of robots.txt File (example):

```text
User-agent: *
Disallow: /checkout/
Disallow: /customer/
Disallow: /catalogsearch/
Disallow: /catalog/product_compare/
Disallow: /*?*product_list_order=
Disallow: /*?*product_list_mode=
Disallow: /*?*product_list_limit=
Disallow: /*SID=
# Model training: opt out
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /
Sitemap: https://www.example.com/sitemap.xml
```

### 2. Add JSON-LD Product markup with availability

Add a small template to the product page through your theme's catalog_product_view.xml layout, so every product carries price, currency and stock as JSON-LD next to the core microdata. [\[5\]](https://github.com/magento/magento2/blob/2.4-develop/app/code/Magento/Catalog/view/frontend/layout/catalog_product_view.xml) [\[9\]](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/merchant-listing)

Magento_Catalog/templates/product/jsonld.phtml (in your theme):

```php
<?php
/** @var \Magento\Catalog\Block\Product\View $block */
$product = $block->getProduct();
$data = [
    '@context' => 'https://schema.org',
    '@type' => 'Product',
    'name' => $product->getName(),
    'sku' => $product->getSku(),
    'url' => $product->getProductUrl(),
    'offers' => [
        '@type' => 'Offer',
        'price' => $product->getFinalPrice(),
        'priceCurrency' => $product->getStore()->getCurrentCurrencyCode(),
        'availability' => $product->isSaleable()
            ? 'https://schema.org/InStock'
            : 'https://schema.org/OutOfStock',
    ],
];
?>
<script type="application/ld+json"><?= json_encode($data, JSON_UNESCAPED_SLASHES | JSON_HEX_TAG) ?></script>
```

### 3. Write option prices and stock into the page

For configurable products, add a short table of options with their prices and stock to the description, or sell variants that matter on their own as simple products with their own addresses, so an agent can answer without the swatches. [\[4\]](https://github.com/magento/magento2/blob/2.4-develop/app/code/Magento/Swatches/view/base/web/js/swatch-renderer.js)

### 4. Publish delivery and returns pages, and turn on RMA

Write CMS pages with delivery costs per region and your return terms, and link them from product pages. On Adobe Commerce, enable returns in Stores \> Settings \> Configuration \> Sales \> Sales \> RMA Settings. [\[6\]](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/commerce-admin/stores-sales/order-management/returns/rma-configure)

### 5. Decide your AI bot policy at the edge

On Adobe Commerce cloud, Advanced Security's Bot Management can tell verified AI crawlers and fetchers from suspected bots; ask Adobe support to set the policy you want. Self-hosted, set it in your CDN or firewall, and let verified bots through. [\[8\]](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/commerce-on-cloud/user-guide/cdn/advanced-security)

## What Adobe has announced for AI agents

Adobe's agent commerce work runs through Adobe Commerce and its AI visibility products. Here is what we could confirm, newest last.

- **Apr 2026: Checkout in agent-powered interactions.** At Adobe Summit, Adobe said partnerships with Adyen, PayPal and Stripe would support checkout as it brings transactions into agent-powered interactions. [\[10\]](https://news.adobe.com/news/2026/04/adobe-expands-partner-ecosystem)
- **Apr 2026: Brand visibility in AI answers.** Adobe Commerce enhancements with LLM Optimizer aim to show how AI systems read products, through catalog enrichment and product page optimisation. [\[11\]](https://news.adobe.com/news/2026/04/adobe-introduces-brand-visibility-solution)
- **Jun 2026: MCP, ACP and UCP on the roadmap.** Adobe's developer blog described native MCP support and a commitment to the Agentic Commerce Protocol and Universal Commerce Protocol, without release dates. [\[12\]](https://blog.developer.adobe.com/en/publish/2026/06/the-architectural-foundations-of-an-agentic-commerce-platform)
- **Oct 2026: Commerce MCP: coming soon.** Adobe's Commerce MCP documentation, covering discovery through in-conversation checkout, is still marked Coming Soon. [\[13\]](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/commerce-learn/ai-and-agentic-commerce/commerce-mcp/commerce-mcp-overview)

## What Aiscovery checks on Magento

From the outside, the way an agent sees your store. Nothing to install, and agents stop before login, cart, checkout and payment.

- What your robots.txt declares for each AI crawler, including Disallow: /\*? and other rules that block product or variant addresses.
- Page basics and JSON-LD syntax; microdata-only product pages show up as missing JSON-LD.
- Reachability, redirects and response for our identified checker, which reads pages without running JavaScript.
- AI-facing files: sitemaps, llms.txt and llms-full.txt.
- GPT-6 Luna and Gemini try to find a product, a variant's price, stock, delivery cost and returns, stopping before cart and checkout.

## Questions about Magento and AI agents

**Q: Where is robots.txt in Magento 2?**

A: In the admin under Content \> Design \> Configuration: edit the Global row or a website, open Search Engine Robots and edit the custom instructions. On Adobe Commerce cloud, changes take effect only in Production with search engine indexing turned on.

**Q: Does Magento block AI crawlers?**

A: Its default instructions don't name any AI crawler. But they block every address with a query string for all crawlers, and on Adobe's cloud, bot management comes only with the paid Advanced Security add-on.

**Q: Does Magento output JSON-LD structured data?**

A: Not in core. Magento's templates use microdata for name, SKU, price and currency, without stock availability. Add JSON-LD through your theme or an extension.

**Q: Why do agents quote the wrong price on configurable products?**

A: Options on configurable products are drawn and priced by JavaScript after the page loads. An agent that doesn't work the swatches reports the starting price shown before a choice.

**Q: Can AI agents check out on Adobe Commerce?**

A: Adobe has announced checkout partnerships with Adyen, PayPal and Stripe for agent-powered interactions, and its Commerce MCP is marked Coming Soon. We found no agent checkout announced for Magento Open Source.

**Q: Do I need a Magento extension to use Aiscovery?**

A: No. Aiscovery tests your storefront from the outside, the way an agent sees it, so there is nothing to install.
